Graveyard Creek

Graveyard Creek is a nice site with enough open space for two picnic tables and grills. If there isn't a breeze, the no-see-ums (tiny biting gnats) can be really annoying.
Like most ground sites, it is popular with powerboaters on the weekends.

At low tide even canoes and kayaks must approach the campsite from Ponce De Leon Bay via a narrow winding channel.
You can also reach this site via Graveyard Creek and the creeks between the islands from Shark River. This route is especially attractive on windy days. Ponce De Leon Bay is shallow and builds a nasty chop in windy weather.

The landscape of the shoreline changes from year to year, from month, and from week to week, modified by storms and tides. Friends of mine were at Graveyard Creek when a strong southwest wind piled water up in the bay and turned the campsite into an island. Waves were washing into the outhouse and they were prepared to pile all their gear on the picnic tables and sit on top of it.
This picture was taken the following week.

The creek bank here is a good place to castnet mullet for bait or for supper.

A word of warning about tides: There are strong tidal currents between the islands of the Shark and Little Shark rivers. The tide in Cormorant Pass can nearly bring a paddler to a halt. There also are strong currents in Midway Pass, Tarpon Creek, East Cape Canal, and Middle Cape Canal. Middle Cape Canal has whirlpools and back eddies.

Keep on paddlin' to the remote sites.
